Western style furniture tends to be large, made of wood and without much detailing. Western drawer pulls can be a piece of squared off wooden block or twig pieces. Pine and oak are favorite wood species that are designed into log or mission style furnishings. They are sturdy and are built to last for generations. Modern style western furniture has elegance and style that are often used in combination with other decorating themes.

Modern western drawers have double-ball bearing glide systems that ensure smooth opening and closing. Dovetails at the front and back keep the drawers tight even after thousands of opening. They may also feature cedar bottoms that shun insects. Just like chests, wooden beds are of solid construction. Polyurethane is now applied to maximize protection and ensure lasting usefulness.

My grandparents’ house is often the venue for family reunions. Relatives from all over the country always love to drop by when they’re in the area. As such, aside from the extra two bedrooms provided for guests, my grandma has more than a dozen folding cots waiting in the attic for those times when several families visit.

Most of the time, the young people are the ones who volunteer to stay up in the attic. We love that part of the house because it’s so spacious. There’s a separate room on one side where trunks are boxes are stored. We use the contents to play dress up and pretend to be people from long-forgotten eras.
